NordVPN Review 2026: Is It Good? Privacy, Speed and Real Cost
Is NordVPN good in 2026? An editorial NordVPN review of its audited no-logs policy, protocols, streaming, plans and the downsides, with prices read on October 23, 2026.

Is NordVPN good? For most people, yes: it has a no-logs policy checked by outside auditors, a fast WireGuard-based protocol, apps for every common device and 10 simultaneous connections on one account. Its weak spots are the lack of a free plan and a renewal price that is several times the intro price. This NordVPN review covers privacy, speed, streaming, the plans and the alternatives, with prices read on October 23, 2026.
NordVPN is a complete, audited VPN that suits privacy, streaming and public Wi-Fi, but it has no free plan and renews at a much higher price than the intro rate. Start with Basic and use the 30-day guarantee to test it: see the current NordVPN deal.
Summarize this article with:
A word on method. This is an editorial review, not a lab report: we did not run our own speed tests, so you will not find a made-up download-speed table here. We rely on NordVPN’s published documentation, third-party audit reports, public reporting on the company’s history and the prices we read ourselves. We are an independent site, and NordVPN is one of our affiliate partners: we may earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you.

Who is behind NordVPN, and why does it matter?
NordVPN is made by Nord Security, a company with offices in Lithuania, the Netherlands, the UK and Panama. The VPN service itself is incorporated in Panama, which sits outside the Five Eyes and similar intelligence-sharing alliances. That is the argument NordVPN makes for its jurisdiction, and it is a reasonable one, though a jurisdiction alone proves nothing about how a company behaves.
What proves more is what outsiders have checked. Nord Security also sells a password manager, NordPass, plus cloud storage and an antivirus, and all of it hangs off one Nord Account. That matters when you read the plans further down.
Privacy and security: what has actually been checked
A VPN is only as private as its logging practices, so the no-logs claim is the first thing to test. NordVPN’s has been audited several times: PwC in 2018 and 2020, then Deloitte in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and our earlier check found a further Deloitte report published in late 2025. An audit is a snapshot, not a guarantee, so read the scope of the latest report on NordVPN’s no-logs page before you trust it.
NordVPN also says its servers run from RAM only, so nothing is written to a hard disk and everything is wiped at each reboot. It began rolling out its own colocated servers in Finland in October 2020 as part of that approach. For day-to-day use you also get a kill switch, Double VPN, obfuscated servers for restrictive networks and P2P servers.
Why do some people avoid NordVPN?
The usual answer is the 2018 breach of a Finnish data center that NordVPN rented. According to the public record, an attacker got in through a flaw in the data center’s remote-administration tool between January and March 2018. The facility told NordVPN in April 2019, NordVPN dropped it, and the story became public in October 2019. Researchers criticized the late disclosure, though there was no sign that user credentials or billing data were taken.
It is fair to hold that against the company, and equally fair to note what changed afterward: owned hardware, RAM-only servers and repeated independent audits. Other complaints are about marketing and pricing, not security, and we cover those below.
Protocols and speed
NordVPN supports OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec, and its own NordLynx protocol, which is built on WireGuard and is the default on most apps. In 2025 it added NordWhisper, a mode designed to make VPN traffic look like ordinary web traffic, which helps on networks that block VPNs.
On speed, we will not quote numbers we did not measure. What we can say is structural: WireGuard-based protocols are lighter than OpenVPN, and with servers in more than 225 locations (NordVPN’s own figure) you can usually find one close to you. Your real results depend on your line, your distance to the server and the time of day. The 30-day guarantee exists so you can measure it yourself.
Streaming: why Netflix sometimes blocks NordVPN
Streaming services license shows country by country, so they block IP addresses they recognize as VPN servers. When Netflix blocks NordVPN, it is usually one server or range that has been flagged, and the provider answers by rotating addresses. No VPN can promise permanent access to a given catalog.
In practice NordVPN is among the VPNs people use for Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and BBC iPlayer, and it has a streaming-focused feature called SmartPlay. If a server fails, switching to another one in the same country or contacting support usually sorts it out. If streaming is your main reason to buy, test your own services during the refund window before the 30 days run out.
Apps, devices and setup
NordVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone, Android TV and Apple TV, and one subscription covers 10 devices at the same time. That is enough for a household. It also offers Meshnet, which links your own devices into a private network for file sharing or remote access.
- Buy a plan on NordVPN’s site and create your Nord Account.
- Download the app for your device and log in.
- Tap Quick Connect for the fastest server, or pick a country on the map.
- Turn on the kill switch in the settings, plus the threat protection features if your plan includes them.
The app is easy to use for the basics, but the settings menu is dense. A beginner can ignore most of it and still be protected.
The plans: what each one adds to the VPN
The VPN is the same on every plan: same servers, same 10 devices. The tiers differ by the security tools bundled around it. Here is how they compare on the US site on October 23, 2026, on the 2-year term with its intro prices:
| Plan | Intro price per month | What it adds | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3.49 | Secure, fast VPN | You want a VPN and nothing else |
| Complete | $3.99 | Next-gen antivirus, ad and tracker blocking, bank transaction monitoring, email, phone, credit card and ID/SSN monitoring, call and message protection, password manager, 1 TB cloud storage | You also need a password manager, antivirus and storage |
| Prime | $6.99 | Everything in Complete plus Coveron advanced identity protection (additional terms apply) | You want the identity-protection layer and read its terms first |

Do you need an antivirus if you use NordVPN? A VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address, but it does not clean an infected file. Complete and Prime add a next-gen antivirus for that, while Basic leaves it to the antivirus you already use. The password manager in those tiers is NordPass, which we review in detail in our NordPass review.
For the intro prices, the renewal bill and the cheapest way to buy, read how much NordVPN costs. The short version: Basic renews at $139.08 a year, not $3.49 a month, so plan for it from day one.
Where NordVPN falls short
- No permanent free plan. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, and NordVPN has advertised a free trial on Android through Google Play, but nothing free forever. Treat sites promising a free NordVPN account with suspicion.
- Renewal pricing. The crossed-out price on the plan cards is the renewal rate, which is where your bill ends up after the first term.
- A crowded app. Many features, and not all of them matter to a first-time user.
- Upsell tiers. Complete and Prime bundle tools you may already have elsewhere. Buy the tier for the tools, not the badge.
NordVPN versus the alternatives
The closest privacy-focused rival is Proton VPN, based in Switzerland, which offers a free plan and positions itself on openness. If a free tier or a Swiss jurisdiction matters more to you than a big feature list, read our Proton VPN review. If you want a wider field including Surfshark and ExpressVPN, our guide on how to choose a VPN walks through the trade-offs.
And if you only need to open one blocked page once, you may not need a subscription at all: see free online VPNs that need no download for what works and what to avoid.
Our recommendation
NordVPN earns its reputation as a complete, fast and reasonably transparent VPN. Start with Basic unless you really want the extras, use the 30-day guarantee to test it on your own connection and streaming apps, and write down the date your first term ends. NordVPN has announced three dated deals through December 9, so if you can wait, the Black Friday deals page tracks each phase.
Our recommendation

Frequently asked questions
Does NordVPN work well?
For privacy, streaming and public Wi-Fi, yes. It has a large server network, a fast WireGuard-based protocol and audited no-logs claims. Real speed varies with your connection and the server you choose, so test it during the 30-day guarantee.
Does NordVPN log your activity?
NordVPN states that it keeps no logs of your browsing activity, and independent auditors (PwC, then Deloitte) have reviewed that claim several times. Audits cover a specific period and scope, so check the newest report on NordVPN’s site.
Why is Netflix blocking NordVPN?
Netflix blocks IP addresses it recognizes as VPN servers to enforce regional licensing. When one server is flagged, try another server in the same country. No VPN can guarantee permanent access.
What protocols does NordVPN use?
OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPsec and NordLynx, its own protocol built on WireGuard. NordWhisper, launched in 2025, is meant to make VPN traffic resemble normal web traffic on restrictive networks.
Why avoid NordVPN?
The most cited reason is a 2018 breach at a rented data center in Finland, disclosed publicly in 2019. Other reasons are the absence of a free plan and the renewal price, which is far above the intro price.
Which VPN is better than NordVPN?
It depends on what you value. Proton VPN is the usual pick for a free plan and a Swiss base; Surfshark and ExpressVPN are the other common rivals. Our VPN comparison guide covers how to choose between them.
Do I need antivirus if I use NordVPN?
A VPN encrypts your traffic but does not scan files for malware. The Complete and Prime plans include a next-gen antivirus; on Basic you keep your own antivirus.
Is NordVPN free?
No permanent free plan exists. You can try it risk-free with the 30-day money-back guarantee on new subscriptions, and NordVPN has advertised a limited free trial on Android through Google Play.
