How to Get ChatGPT Plus for Free: The Legal Routes That Exist in 2026
How to get ChatGPT Plus for free legally: OpenAI's student offer (claim by Oct 31, 2026), the veteran year, teacher and nonprofit programs, plus free alternatives.

You can get ChatGPT Plus for free in 2026, but only through narrow official offers. OpenAI currently runs two free-Plus programs on its own help pages: four months for eligible U.S. college students, and one year for U.S. service members and recent veterans. If you do not fit either, there is no legitimate way to get Plus without paying, and the free plan plus a few free assistants cover a lot of the same ground.
There is no free ChatGPT Plus for everyone, but OpenAI runs two official offers: four free months for eligible U.S. college students (claim by October 31, 2026) and one free year for U.S. service members and recent veterans. Everyone else can use the free plan or a free alternative.
Summarize this article with:
We read OpenAI’s help center, pricing page and terms on October 23, 2026. This page only lists routes that OpenAI itself publishes, and it says clearly who each one is for. It does not cover shared accounts, “keys”, cracked apps or “free Plus” generator sites. Those are risks, not shortcuts, and we explain why further down.
Every legal route at a glance
| Route | Who qualifies | What you get | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back to School offer | Current full-time or part-time students at eligible U.S. colleges and graduate schools | Four free monthly billing periods of Plus | Claim by October 31, 2026; card required; renews at $20 a month |
| Service members and veterans offer | Verified U.S. veterans and retirees who left active duty in the past 12 months, and active service members leaving within 12 months | One free year of Plus | ID.me verification; personal account only; one redemption |
| ChatGPT for Teachers | Verified U.S. K-12 teachers | A free teacher plan (not Plus itself), offered through June 2027 | U.S. certified teachers only |
| OpenAI for Nonprofits | Nonprofit organizations | Up to 75% off Business or Enterprise | Team plans, contact sales |
| Free plan | Anyone | Unlimited everyday text chats, limited tools | No stronger GPT-6 thinking levels |
| ChatGPT Go | Anyone | Higher tool limits for $8 a month | Not free; may include ads |
Two things the table shows at once. First, nearly every free route is aimed at a specific group, mostly in the United States. Second, the generic “get Plus free” videos and blog posts that rank for this keyword rarely point to any of them. If an offer is real, it will have a page on help.openai.com with terms and an end date.
The student offer: four free months of Plus
OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including ChatGPT Work and the other Plus features. It is open to current full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. SheerID checks your enrollment, either through trusted records, your school’s single sign-on, or documents you upload.
The terms that matter, straight from the help page:
- Deadline: claim it by October 31, 2026. That is eight days after we read the page.
- Duration: four free monthly billing periods that start on the day you claim.
- Payment method: required to activate, but you are not charged for the free months.
- After the trial: the subscription renews at $20 a month unless you cancel.
- Cancelling early: access continues to the end of the current monthly period, and any remaining free months are forfeited.
- One redemption only, and it applies to whichever ChatGPT account is signed in when you claim.
- Existing subscribers: if you already pay for monthly Plus directly through ChatGPT, you can still claim. Subscriptions billed through Apple or Google are not supported.

Your school email does not have to match your ChatGPT account, and an earlier student promotion does not block you. The trap is the renewal: set a calendar reminder before the fourth month ends, because the card on file is charged $20 after that. If you do not plan to keep Plus, cancel when you are done rather than at the last minute.
The service member and veteran offer: one free year
For U.S. military users, OpenAI offers a full year of Plus. Its terms page limits it to verified veterans and retirees who left active duty within the past 12 months, and to active service members who will transition within the next 12 months. Verification goes through ID.me, and the offer can only be redeemed on a personal ChatGPT account, not one that belongs to an Enterprise workspace.
Some conditions to know before you start. The offer expires one year after you claim it, cannot be combined with other promotions, cannot be shared, sold or transferred, and is limited to one per eligible subscriber. If your current Plus subscription is billed through an app store, you have to end that subscription first. And if you cancel, you lose the offer, and OpenAI says it cannot reinstate it.
Teachers and nonprofits
OpenAI’s pricing FAQ also lists ChatGPT for Teachers, a free plan for certified U.S. K-12 teachers offered through June 2027. It is a separate teacher workspace, so do not read it as a Plus subscription. The same FAQ says OpenAI for Nonprofits can bring up to 75% off ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, which suits organizations rather than individuals. Both go through OpenAI, not through a third-party “discount” site.
If you do not qualify: what the free plan already covers
Most readers are not U.S. students or veterans, so the useful question is what the free plan gives you. According to OpenAI’s pricing page it includes unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited messages with uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex. What it leaves out is the stronger thinking levels: GPT-6 Medium and High are Plus features.
Our side-by-side of ChatGPT Free vs Plus shows every row of the plan table. If you only want to try the chat without an account, the guide to using ChatGPT without login covers guest mode. And if tools like images and file uploads are your sticking point, Go at $8 a month is the cheapest paid step, though it is not free.
Free alternatives that cover Plus-style jobs
If your goal is a capable assistant rather than the Plus label, several others have free tiers. We opened these pages on October 23, 2026 and describe only what we could see, plus limits the companies state themselves. None of them publishes a message count we can quote.
Google Gemini

Gemini is usually the closest free match for general use. Its page loads without a Google account, and a signed-in free account adds saved activity and image creation, with limits that Google changes over time. When we checked on October 4, a real message sent without an account got an answer. Our roundup of free AI tools with no sign-up compares it with the other options.
Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is built by Microsoft, a major OpenAI partner, and has a free tier. It asked us to sign in on October 23, and it asked at the first message on October 4. Which models you get changes from time to time, so look at the model picker inside the app instead of trusting a list from a blog post.
Claude, Duck.ai and Perplexity
Claude has a free plan with an account, and Anthropic does not publish an exact message count, so expect a usage window that resets. Duck.ai works with no account and lets you switch models, with a daily cap DuckDuckGo says it cannot state as a simple number. Perplexity’s search box worked without sign-in in our capture and is the pick when you want sources next to the answer.
The honest limit of the free route is video. According to reports, OpenAI shut down the Sora app on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026, and quality AI video is mostly paid elsewhere. Our guide to a free AI video generator with no sign-up shows what you can still try without paying.
Methods that look free but are not legal
Searching this topic turns up a lot of YouTube videos and sites with titles like “ChatGPT Plus free forever”. Treat them with suspicion. OpenAI’s Terms of Use say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to someone else. That rules out the cheap “shared Plus account” listings and any login handed to you on a forum.
- Shared or resold accounts: against the terms, and the seller can lose access or take the account back at any moment.
- Keys, code generators and “activators”: We found no sign that OpenAI sells Plus through keys or activation codes, so treat these as scams.
- Modified apps and browser extensions that claim to unlock Plus: they ask for your login or broad browser permissions, which is a common way accounts get stolen.
- Sites that ask for a card “just to verify” a free Plus offer: real offers are claimed inside your ChatGPT account.
We found no standing public free trial of Plus on OpenAI’s pricing page. When a trial appears, it is a campaign like the two above, with a help article, dates and eligibility rules. Anything else should be checked on help.openai.com before you enter any details.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT offer a free trial of Plus?
Not as a standing offer. OpenAI’s pricing page lists no general trial. What exists are targeted promotions: four free months for eligible U.S. students (claim by October 31, 2026) and one free year for qualifying U.S. service members, veterans and retirees.
How much does ChatGPT Plus cost?
$20 a month on OpenAI’s US pricing page as of October 23, 2026. Plus is billed monthly, with no annual plan, and you can cancel any time. Go costs $8 a month and Pro starts at $100.
How do I go from ChatGPT Plus back to free?
Cancel the subscription in your account settings and the account returns to the free plan when the paid period ends. With the student offer, Plus access continues to the end of the current monthly billing period and unused free months are forfeited. With the veteran offer, cancelling ends the promotion and OpenAI cannot reinstate it.
What are the key differences between ChatGPT Free and paid plans?
Free has unlimited everyday text chats but limited tools. Go raises tool limits, and Plus adds GPT-6 Medium and High thinking, expanded deep research and Codex and Work access. Pro adds Extra High thinking and much higher allowances.
Is there a promo code for free ChatGPT Plus?
No permanent code exists. The official student and veteran offers are claimed through verification inside your ChatGPT account, not by typing a code. Treat any “free for life” code with suspicion and check the source on help.openai.com.
Is sharing a ChatGPT Plus account allowed?
No. OpenAI’s Terms of Use say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to someone else. Buying a shared Plus account puts your data and the account itself at risk.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth paying for?
Only if a specific limit on the free plan keeps blocking you, such as shallow answers on long tasks or low file and image caps. Try the free plan for a couple of weeks first and write down what stops you.
