ChatGPT Without Login: How to Use It With No Account in 2026

ChatGPT without login works on chatgpt.com in guest mode: one chat at a time, no saved history, no images or uploads. Here is what it does, where it stops, and the alternatives.

You can use ChatGPT without login: open chatgpt.com, click into the prompt box and type. No email address, password or phone number is asked for in guest mode, and it costs nothing. The trade-offs are real, though: one conversation at a time, no saved history, and no image creation or file uploads until you sign in.

Key takeaway

To use ChatGPT without login, open chatgpt.com and type in the prompt box: guest mode is free and asks for no email or phone number. You get one chat at a time, no saved history, no image creation and no file uploads. For more privacy or model choice, Duck.ai also works with no account.

Summarize this article with:

We opened the guest page and sent a real message without an account on October 23, 2026, and ChatGPT answered normally. OpenAI says guest access depends on your country and network, so some readers still hit a login wall. This guide covers what guest mode does, where it stops, and which other AI chats work with no sign-up if ChatGPT turns you away.

How to use ChatGPT without logging in

  1. Go to chatgpt.com in any browser, on a computer or a phone. Use the official address only.
  2. Ignore the “Log in” and “Sign up for free” buttons in the top right corner. They do not block the page.
  3. If a cookie banner appears, you can decline the non-essential cookies. We did, and the chat worked anyway.
  4. Click the “Ask ChatGPT” box, type your question and press Enter.
  5. Copy anything you want to keep before you close the tab or start a new chat. Guest chats are not saved.

Nothing is hidden behind a payment screen. If a site asks for a card number “to unlock ChatGPT”, you are not on OpenAI’s service. The only guest mode that counts is the one on chatgpt.com.

What guest mode can and cannot do

Guest mode is a trial lane, and it is good for what most people do on a first visit: a quick answer, a rewrite, a translation, an email draft, a summary of text you paste in. Where it falls short is anything that needs memory or tools. In our test, we asked the guest chat whether it could create images, and it said image generation is not available while logged out. The sidebar on the page says the same thing in other words: signing in is how you get saved chats, images and file uploads.

The detail that trips people up is the “new chat” button. Starting a new chat while logged out makes the previous one inaccessible, according to OpenAI’s help center. If you sign in or create an account afterward, only your latest conversation shows up in the sidebar. Everything earlier is gone.

Which model do you get without an account?

OpenAI does not name the guest model or publish a message cap for logged-out visitors, and its own pages are not fully in step while GPT-6 rolls out. The pricing page headlines “unlimited text chats with GPT-6” for the Free plan. The models article says Free and Go default to GPT-5.6 Luna, and that logged-out users do not get GPT-5.6 Sol.

When we asked the guest chat which model it was, it answered GPT-6. Treat that with caution, since chatbots are unreliable narrators of their own version. The practical takeaway is simple: you get a capable everyday model, not the heavier reasoning models reserved for paid plans, and anyone quoting you an exact guest message limit has no official source for it.

When ChatGPT asks you to log in anyway

OpenAI’s help center says guest access works in supported countries, including Europe and the UK, but that access may vary by location or network, so some users are asked to log in or sign up before they can send a message. It does not list the reasons. If you see a login wall with no way to type, the options are:

  • Reload the page in a fresh private window, or try another browser.
  • Try a different network, such as mobile data instead of office or hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Create a free account. It costs nothing and does not commit you to a paid plan.
  • Use one of the no-account alternatives below.

For a longer list of tools that skip the sign-up step across text, images and search, see our guide to free AI tools with no sign-up.

Privacy: what happens to a guest chat

Not having an account does not mean not being recorded. OpenAI says whether chats are used to train its models by default depends on your location and settings, and it recommends not sharing sensitive information. The footer on the guest page also warns that conversations may be reviewed and used to improve the AI.

You can opt out. In Settings, under Data controls, turn off “Improve the model for everyone”. That setting is stored in your browser, so it resets if you clear your data or switch browsers. Keep passwords, ID numbers, medical details and client data out of guest chats regardless of the setting.

AI chats that work without an account

ChatGPT is not the only assistant that lets you type first and sign up never. We opened each of these with a screenshot tool on October 23, 2026, and added notes from our earlier hands-on check on October 4.

AssistantWorks with no accountWhat is missing without one
ChatGPT (guest mode)YesHistory, images, uploads, several chats
Duck.ai (DuckDuckGo)YesDaily cap is unpublished; recent chats stay on your device
GeminiYesSaved activity, image creation
PerplexityYes, for simple searchesHistory and saved searches
Microsoft CopilotNo, it showed a sign-in screenEverything until you sign in
ClaudeNo, it sent us to a sign-in page on October 4Everything until you sign in
Checked October 23, 2026 (Copilot, Duck.ai, Gemini, Perplexity) and October 4, 2026 (Claude). Access can change by country and over time.

Duck.ai, the privacy-first option

Duck.ai start page by DuckDuckGo with a prompt box, model selector and the note that DuckDuckGo anonymizes chats
Duck.ai opens straight to a prompt box with a model picker (captured October 23, 2026).

Duck.ai is the closest thing to a better version of guest ChatGPT if privacy is your reason for skipping the account. The page itself states that DuckDuckGo anonymizes your chats, and it lets you pick the model from a menu under the prompt box. The free list has included small models from several labs and it changes, so check the selector rather than trusting an old article.

The catch is usage. DuckDuckGo’s help pages say paying subscribers get higher daily limits and that it cannot give a simple prompt count, so expect a cap you cannot see until you hit it. It is a solid tool for comparing how different models answer the same question.

Perplexity, for answers with sources

Perplexity shows its search box without a sign-in wall (captured October 23, 2026).

If you want to check a fact rather than have a conversation, Perplexity reads the web and writes a short answer with its sources listed. A simple search works with no account. An account mostly buys you history, and the limits on its heavier research features change often, so we do not quote numbers.

Gemini, and the ones that insist on an account

Gemini’s page opened on a prompt box with no sign-in wall in our capture, and the sidebar offers “Sign in to save activity”. When we sent a real message without a Google account on October 4, we got an answer. Without an account there is no history and no image generation.

Copilot and Claude are the opposite case. Copilot’s page asked us to sign in with a Microsoft, Apple or Google account, and Claude redirected us to a sign-in page when we tried it on October 4. Both have free plans, but they are not “no sign-up” tools. If you want to compare many models side by side without picking one, our guide to LMArena explains how the anonymous battle format works.

When a free ChatGPT account is worth creating

Start as a guest, then sign up only if a limit bothers you. A free account keeps your history, lets you run several chats, and adds limited image creation, uploads, voice, deep research and memory. OpenAI’s pricing page lists the Free plan at $0 a month with unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails.

Signing up does not commit you to paying anything. If you later wonder whether a paid plan is worth it, our ChatGPT Free vs Plus comparison lays out what each tier changes, and the guide on getting ChatGPT Plus for free covers the official offers that exist right now. Paying only makes sense once a specific limit keeps getting in your way.

Frequently asked questions

How do I search on ChatGPT without logging in?

Ask your question in guest mode on chatgpt.com as you would on any account. TechCrunch reported in February 2025 that ChatGPT’s web search had opened to logged-out users. We did not test whether every guest answer includes web sources today, so for sourced answers Perplexity is the safer pick.

Can I use ChatGPT without an account?

Yes, on chatgpt.com in supported countries. No email or phone number is requested in guest mode. OpenAI warns that access can vary by location or network, so a login prompt can still appear for some visitors.

Is ChatGPT really free without logging in?

Yes. Guest mode is free and no card is requested. A free account is also $0 a month, with separate limits on uploads, images, voice and deep research. Only the Go, Plus and Pro plans cost money.

Are my ChatGPT conversations saved without an account?

No. Chats stay available only for the current session in the same browser, and starting a new chat makes the previous one inaccessible. You can save a conversation by logging in or creating an account, but only the latest thread carries over.

Is there a message limit for logged-out ChatGPT?

OpenAI does not publish a cap for logged-out visitors. It does say you can only have one conversation at a time. Treat any specific number from a blog as a guess.

Can two people share a ChatGPT account instead?

OpenAI’s Terms of Use say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to someone else. If a friend or family member only wants to try ChatGPT, they can use guest mode on their own device.

What is the best free AI chat without sign-up?

It depends on the job. ChatGPT guest mode suits a quick one-off question, Duck.ai suits privacy and model choice, and Perplexity suits searches with sources. None of them replaces an account if you need saved history.
